Common Problems with Smartphones | Salinas, CA

Smartphones are helpful, fun, and important little devices for the busy businessman, the tech-savvy teenager, and just about everyone else in between. But for all of their brilliance and gadgetry, they don’t come without their share of unique problems. Fortunately, the most common ailments of today’s smartphones can be overcome, or at least minimized. Here’s a look at the most popular struggles.

Battery Life

With larger screens, dazzling graphics, and an app for just about anything you can imagine, it’s no wonder we’re glued to our smartphones 24 hours a day. Of course all of that Instagraming, Facebook updating, and Angry Bird destruction, can turn two minutes into six hours faster than you can say “selfie,” and leave you with a flashing battery icon when that important call comes in.

Fortunately, there are simple fixes such as: turning down the brightness, installing a battery-saving app, and tweaking a few other settings to give your power-source a much needed break. Of course, buying a mobile charger and perhaps a backup battery are viable options as well.

Storage Space

Face it, the day you stood there plunking down your hard-earned cash for that slice of cutting-edge technology, you weren’t listening to the sales person drone on and on about gigabytes and added storage. You were blinded by the sheer awesomeness of the device. It’s not until a couple of days later that you panic because the screen suggests there is simply not enough space for your over-flowing collection of selfies and YouTube videos.

Fear not. Most of our cries have been heard, and a majority of manufactures have developed several ways to ease our storage blues. Most new smartphones have memory expansion available by way of micro SD slots which should solve the average user’s problems. But for those who are hardcore data munchers, the ability to plug into external storage devices via USB is a powerful option. Other creative ways to free up space are being created every day, such as, Wi-Fi mobile storage devices and “virtual” drop boxes.

Overheating

Every new generation of smartphones brings with it more and more built-in conveniences for modern-day living. You can now accomplish everything from turning off the lights in your home, to holding a business meeting face-to-face via video-chat. In the meantime, you’ll need plenty of music and games to get you through what would otherwise be dead-space in your life. All of these features mean an increased work-load for your little gadget. And as a result, your phone might run incredibly hot. High temperature can cause all sorts of problems, from reduced performance, to freezes and unexpected shut-downs. Be kind to your smartphone in these situations. Give it a chance to cool down and in extreme cases, take your battery out and let it get some air. Your phone will thank you.

Busted Screen

Ah, who doesn’t remember their first drop? No proper smartphone is without a few impressive battle scars. A few slips here and there are inevitable with such a delicate and slim piece of equipment, no matter how cautious you are. And no part of the phone is more nurtured and cared for than the screen.

A phone case is an obvious choice. But it might add too much bulk for your taste, and not to mention it’ll cover all that mesmerizing plastic and low-polished chrome. The good news is phone cases don’t have to be ugly and too big for your pocket. Plus, they can do more nowadays than just protect your screen from shattering. Modern cases offer everything from doubling as a money-clip, to warding off attackers with a 650,000 volt built-in stun gun. If all else fails and you’re tired of walking around with a phone screen that resembles a spider’s web, you can always replace it yourself with a screen kit, or take it to any decent repair shop for a cheaper alternative to buying a whole new phone.
